OP–XY

OP-1 field physical study

Build performs and records each instrument on the Field tape, one track at a time, then loops the finished song. Play prepares the same sounds and notes, then plays the finished tape without waiting through the build. Switching modes restarts the selected song. The song menu can restart a stopped build or return to your own project. Song arrangements use the connected Field synth and tape recorder.

The Sampler folder contains individual instrument notes. On T1, the encoders change start, loop in, loop out and end. Matching loop markers disables looping. Hold Shift for direction, tuning in cents, loop fade and gain. Tap an encoder to zoom and trim at 0.01-percent precision. T2 shapes the envelope. The project menu can import your own individual sound into SNAPSHOT. The same keys perform and record every sound.

Press Output, the key marked COM, to open mixdown. T4 records the combined stereo output after the master effect. Navigate to another mode and perform while recording; return to Output and press T2 to stop. T2 plays or stops the selected saved side, and T3 selects side A or B. Each side can hold up to six minutes. With the canvas focused, C opens Output and keys 2, 3 and 4 operate its controls; Escape returns. Mixdowns remain in this browser; USB file access and FM transmission are not connected yet.

Hold Shift and press COM to open connections. T1 opens System Settings; blue selects a setting group, ochre selects a parameter, and orange changes Brightness, Power Off or Count In when selected. T1 returns to COM, and Shift plus COM returns to the previous screen. If Power Off is Delayed, flipping the switch starts a six-second shutdown; flip it back to abort, or press COM for instant off. With the canvas focused, Shift plus C, the number 1, arrow keys and Enter provide keyboard access; Shift plus Enter lowers a numeric value. P flips the power switch and C confirms a pending shutdown.

Hold Shift and press Mixer to inspect the sound path and its zero-level warnings. With the canvas focused, Shift plus 4 opens the same screen. Press Mixer or a track key to return to mixer controls.

On the Tempo page, turn the orange encoder to set metronome level, or tap it to mute and restore that level. The monitor click sounds during tape playback and the recording count-in. It is separate from the internal instrument recording input.

On Mixer T3, the colored encoders control the master Delay, Punch or Grid effect on the combined output. Press T3 again to toggle it. Hold Shift and press T3 to browse the connected effects; turn blue to choose and press T3 or blue to load. With the canvas focused, F3 selects and toggles the effect, Shift plus F3 opens its browser, Up and Down choose, Enter loads, and Escape cancels. Master effects are heard on playback but do not enter new tape recordings.

In Tape or Mixer mode, sound keys one and two set loop in and loop out, key three toggles the loop, hold key four to break playback until release while an active loop keeps time, key five reverses tape direction, and hold key six to repeat a short tempo-locked tape slice until release. With the canvas focused, hold B for Break or H for Chop. In Tape mode, Shift plus the up-arrow key lifts all four tracks inside an active loop. Shift plus the down-arrow key merges those lifted parts onto the selected track at the playhead. Shift plus the scissors key joins the closest take beside the active take, and can be repeated. With the canvas focused, Shift plus Up, Shift plus Down and Shift plus X provide the same edits. Merge Drop needs a free destination on the selected track and uses the levels and mutes captured at Lift All. A lifted take remains available after reload when its audio is stored in this browser.

In Tape or Mixer mode, hold sound key seven or eight and turn an encoder to memorize its parameter change. Release to return to the previous value. Hold the same key again for momentary recall; the live mix and any displayed parameter values change while it is held. With the canvas focused, M and N hold Memo one and Memo two. Memo values are temporary performance settings and do not survive reload.

In Synth mode, press and hold the piano keys to play the provisional Dimension sound; release them to end notes. Sound keys 1 through 8 select independent slots, and the octave arrows shift pitch. Hold Shift and press a sound key to browse the working engine, Snapshot folder and user folders; blue selects a folder and ochre loads a patch into that slot. In the browser, Shift plus T1 creates a USER folder, Lift then Drop moves a saved patch into another folder, T1 names a user item, and T4 opens delete for a saved patch or empty folder. Hold a sound key for two seconds to save its complete T1 through T4 patch as a dated snapshot. With the canvas focused, Numpad 1 through 8 select slots, Shift plus Numpad opens their browsers, and the bracket keys move to adjacent slots; Left and Right change folders, Up and Down browse patches, Shift plus Up lifts, Shift plus Down drops, Shift plus F1 creates a folder, F1 names a user item, F4 opens delete, Shift plus S saves the active slot, and Escape returns. While naming, Left and Right move the cursor, Up and Down change a character, F1 saves, F2 advances, F3 cancels, and F4 erases a character. A second F4 confirms deletion; F3 or Escape cancels. On synth T1, blue changes waveform, ochre stereo width, gray filter cutoff and orange resonance. On synth T2, the encoders shape attack, decay, sustain and release. Hold Shift on T2 for play mode, portamento, bend range and patch volume; the bend setting is saved, but external pitch input is not connected yet. In Drum mode, the piano keys trigger 24 sounds from the selected DBOX or stereo DRUM sampler kit. Sound keys 1 through 8 select kits; hold Shift with a sound key to browse DBOX, DRUM and saved presets. On DBOX T1, the encoders shape the selected key's first oscillator; hold Shift to shape its second oscillator and filter. On DRUM T1, blue tunes the selected sample region, ochre and gray set its in and out points, and orange selects play to end, loop or play once. Hold Shift to change direction, pan, fade and gain. On drum T2, the encoders shape attack, gain, release and timing. In either instrument mode, T3 opens the selected effect and a second press turns it off. Hold Shift and press T3 to browse the connected Delay, Punch and Grid effects; turn blue to choose and press T3 or blue to load. Delay uses blue for range, ochre for speed, gray for feedback and orange for level. Punch uses blue for frequency, ochre for punch, gray for rounds and orange for power. Grid uses blue for X size, ochre for Y size, gray for Z feedback and orange for mix. Their sound and motion are provisional. T4 opens the selected LFO and a second press turns it off. Hold Shift and press T4 to browse Tremolo and Value; blue chooses, T4 or blue loads, and Escape cancels. Tremolo uses blue speed, ochre pitch amount, gray volume amount and orange modulation envelope; Shift plus blue adjusts fine speed and Shift plus orange changes shape. Value uses blue speed, ochre amount, gray note-synced or free destination and orange pitch, cutoff or gain parameter; tap blue to change square, ramp, saw or sine shape, and Shift plus blue adjusts fine speed. The sound and animation curves are provisional. With the canvas focused, F1 through F4 select instrument modules. Shift plus F3 or F4 opens the corresponding effect or LFO browser; Up and Down choose, Enter or the track key loads, and Escape cancels. Press V on the Value page to cycle its waveform. The last selected Synth or Drum sound remains playable and can be recorded in Tape mode. Power off stops sounding notes. Losing focus releases manually held notes while desktop tape and song playback continue.

In Synth or Drum mode, hold Shift and press the three-dot sequencer key to open the browser; blue selects a sequencer and tapping blue or pressing the sequencer key enables it. Arpeggio, Endless, Finger, Hold, Pattern, Sketch and Tombola are connected in this study. In Hold, blue changes the break point for latched keys, ochre switches mono and poly, gray transposes, and orange turns latching on or off; tap orange to clear latched notes. Press the sequencer key again to toggle the selected type. On Arpeggio, Endless, Finger, Pattern, and Sketch, tap orange to toggle Hold. Arpeggio distributes held musical notes; orange Hold latches them. Blue sets note value, ochre trigger mode, gray trigger pattern, and orange Hold. Shift with the four encoders changes note length, type, pause or skip, and swing. In Endless, hold Shift while pressing musical keys to store notes, Shift plus forward to insert a space or lengthen a held note, and Shift plus rewind to remove the last note. Release Shift and hold a musical key to play and transpose the stored sequence; orange Hold latches playback. Blue sets note value, ochre swing, gray trigger pattern, orange Hold; shifted blue changes manual mode, gray rotates the pattern, and orange selects direction. In Finger, white musical keys select and perform independent patterns. Hold Shift and press a musical key to add a note at the cursor. Blue or the left and right arrows move the cursor, Shift plus blue or an arrow erases, ochre sets swing, gray sets pattern length, orange enables Hold, and Shift plus orange selects Join, Replace or Fill. Finger starts with empty patterns until the Field factory notes are captured. In Pattern, hold Shift and press a musical key to add a note at the cursor. Blue or left and right arrows move the cursor; Shift plus an arrow detaches the edit cursor during playback, while Shift with blue erases as it moves. Ochre sets swing and Shift plus ochre offsets notes; gray sets length and Shift plus gray moves the playback section; orange enables Hold and Shift plus orange selects direction. In Sketch, blue and ochre draw the path across X and Y, gray and orange move the cursor without drawing, and musical keys set its height and play it. Hold Shift and turn blue backwards to erase, ochre to set the speed divider, gray to change the grid, or orange to start and stop Hold. Sketch playback timing and pitch scaling are provisional. In Tombola, musical keys drop note balls into a rotating cage and wall impacts sound them. Blue sets rotation speed and direction, ochre gravity, gray the cage shape including an open release, and orange bounciness; Shift plus blue switches manual rotation. Shape choices and collision response remain provisional. In Tape or Mixer mode the sequencer uses the last selected Synth or Drum instrument. With the canvas focused, Shift plus Q opens the browser, Q toggles or enables, Up and Down select a browser entry, Enter enables, and Escape returns to the instrument page. Timing and screen motion remain provisional.

Drag to orbit, tap keys and buttons, and turn encoders. Select T1 through T4 as the recording track. Hold Record or R and press a piano key to start capturing the selected Synth or Drum sound; Shift plus Record or Shift plus R arms recording, then Play or Space starts recording after the four-beat count-in when enabled, or immediately when disabled. Press Stop to finish and save a non-silent take. Press Record while the tape is already playing to capture immediately. The orange encoder changes recording level, and Shift plus orange changes recording pan. Recording needs forward tape and captures internal instruments only. With an active loop, successive passes are saved on the selected track and one undo removes the recording. On Tape, the up-arrow key lifts the take under the playhead, the down-arrow key drops it at the playhead, and the scissors key splits it. Hold Shift and turn the blue encoder to slide the take under the playhead. Hold Tape and press left or right for undo or redo; with the canvas focused, Control plus Z and Control plus Y also work. Play and Stop control tape transport; Shift plus Play starts reverse playback. On the tape page, turn the blue encoder to scrub, turn the gray encoder to change tape speed even while recording, or hold Shift with gray for fixed percentage steps; hold the arrows to shuttle, hold Shift and tap an arrow to jump between grid markers, or hold Shift and tap Stop to change grid resolution. With the canvas focused, Space plays, Shift plus Space plays in reverse, keyboard arrows shuttle, Shift plus arrows jump, and Shift plus S changes the grid. Sound keys one through six set loop in, loop out, loop toggle, break, reverse, and Chop. Shift plus Tape opens the tape browser; turn the blue and ochre encoders to select a style and tape. T1 opens the name editor; turn blue or use the arrows to move its cursor, turn ochre to change a character, then T1 saves or T3 cancels. T2 loads, T3 makes a new tape, and Shift plus T3 clones the selected tape. T4 opens Erase for the loaded tape or Delete for another selected tape; hold all four track keys together to confirm, or press Escape to cancel. On mixer T1, the four colored encoders change track levels; hold Shift while turning an encoder to pan, or hold Shift and tap T1 through T4 to mute. On mixer T2, turn the encoders to shape low, mid, high, and overall EQ, or tap an encoder to toggle that part of the EQ. On mixer T4, blue and ochre set left and right master levels, gray sets drive, orange sets release; hold Shift while turning blue or ochre to move both master levels together. With the canvas focused, F1 through F4 select mixer pages, and Shift plus F1 through F4 toggles mute on mixer T1. P flips the power switch; number keys one through four select Synth, Drum, Tape, and Mixer modes. T opens tempo; repeat T to tap its BPM, or turn gray to change tape speed while recording; Shift plus T opens the tape browser. Press Help or slash for guidance on the current screen; while Help is open, choose a physical control or its keyboard shortcut to learn its role. Shift plus Help or Shift plus slash opens the on-device guide. Blue and the arrow keys browse guide sections; T1 through T4 or F1 through F4 jump to Synth, Drum, Tape and Mixer. Help or Escape returns to the previous screen.
